In 1893, Charles of Harvard and the Committee of Ten developed a system for educating many incoming immigrants and farm refugees for single-tasked jobs in the growing industrial economy that added four more years and a wider variety of subjects standardizing k-12 education.
Folks, our education system has mostly stayed the same since then. In the middle of the 20th century, the economy started to change, as did school hours and the number of college graduates.
Then, in the 21st century, programs like No Child Left Behind and Race to Top programs were implemented in the US, leaving teachers having to lecture a significant amount of shallow content to prepare students for state tests to keep jobs and grow school ratings.
The problem is that modern, successful companies in the era of innovation look for "smart creatives," as Google executives call their employees. Parents program their kids' beliefs, which, in turn, shapes their potential.
As a parent, you hold a significant role in shaping your child's beliefs and identity. Just as you learned and mirrored everything from your surroundings and caregivers when you were young, your children also pick up on your behavior with others, your emotional state, and your perspective on the world. This influence is profound, as parents are the ones who form a child's first identity.
The problem is that children form most of their life beliefs and "rules" before they turn nine, while their brains' maturation process is not complete until their late 20s. So, children interpret reality a lot more literally than mature adults do. Little ones automatically assume something is wrong with them and that they are "unworthy" if, say, mom is mad or dad is yelling repeatedly. They may believe that success and money mean unhappiness if Dad is always at work and looks stressed out. These beliefs then guide grownups to less-than jobs and relationships in life.
